Stay reachable — device setup
How to set up your phone or computer so people can reach your GlobalRoute name card even when you are not staying at the screen.
How reachability works
GlobalRoute is not a always-on phone line like traditional native app. There are two layers:
| Mode | When | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Live line | You are logged in with any GlobalRoute tab or installed app open (even in the background for a while) | Instant ringtone in the app. Microphone is used only after you Accept. |
| Push wake | App / tab closed, or phone locked long enough that the live connection died | OS notification only. Tap it to open My Status and answer. Delivery depends on OS + browser battery rules. |
Callers do not need an account. They open your link
(globalroute.me/you) and tap Call. You need an account, calling enabled on
My Status, and a working alert path on each device you care about.
Android
Reliability overview
| App / browser | Closed + locked wake | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Android app (APK) FCM + call foreground |
Best | Strongest locked-phone wake. Keeps an active call alive when you switch apps or lock the screen. Requires Unrestricted battery. |
| Chrome PWA Install / Add to Home Screen |
Good → limited | Works when battery allows. Deep Doze can delay alerts until you open the app. |
| Edge / Samsung Internet PWA | OK | Same Web Push limits as Chrome. Prefer the Android app or Chrome. |
| Firefox on Android | Limited | Browsing works; reliable background call wake is weaker than Chromium PWAs. |
Android app (recommended)
- Install from the Android app page.
- Open the app → log in → My Status → Enable push alerts → allow notifications.
- Tap Allow unrestricted battery (or App info → Battery → Unrestricted). Turn off OEM “sleeping apps”.
- During a call you can Home out or lock the phone — an “Active call” notification keeps audio up; tap it to return.
Chrome PWA setup
- Open https://globalroute.me/admin/calls in Chrome and log in.
- Menu (⋮) → Install app / Add to Home screen.
- Open the installed app → Enable push alerts → Allow notifications.
- Confirm status says push is on for this device (not only another device).
- Optional: Send test push, then immediately close the app and lock the screen.
- Phone settings → Apps → Chrome (and the installed GlobalRoute shortcut if listed) → Battery → Unrestricted.
- On Xiaomi / Huawei / Oppo / Samsung, also turn off “Put app to sleep” / “Deep sleeping apps” for Chrome.
- Notifications → ensure GlobalRoute / Chrome alerts are allowed, sound on, not silenced by Focus / DND.
iPhone / iPad (iOS & iPadOS)
Use Safari (not Chrome-in-iOS for install). Web Push for installed PWAs needs iOS / iPadOS 16.4+. Background wake is stricter than on Android; keep expectations realistic.
- Open My Status in Safari and log in.
- Share → Add to Home Screen → Add.
- Open the home-screen icon (not a Safari tab) → Enable push alerts → Allow.
- Settings → Notifications → GlobalRoute → Allow Notifications, Lock Screen, Sounds, Banners.
- Low Power Mode and Focus can delay or hide alerts — turn them off when you need to be reachable.
| Browser | Install + push | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Safari | Supported16.4+ | Only reliable install path for Web Push on Apple devices. |
| Chrome / Edge / Firefox on iOS | Not for PWA push | They use WebKit; home-screen install + push must be done from Safari. |
Desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux)
Desktop is excellent while a window stays open (live line). Closed-window push works on Chromium and recent Safari, but a sleeping laptop or closed lid will not ring you.
| Browser | OS | Setup |
|---|---|---|
| Google Chrome / Edge / Brave | Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS | Open My Status → Install app (optional) → Enable push alerts → Allow notifications in the browser and in OS notification settings. Keep the machine awake if you need continuous reachability. Plain “Chromium” / ungoogled builds often have no Google push service — use Chrome or Edge instead. |
| Safari | macOS Sonoma 14+ | File → Add to Dock (or Share) for the installed PWA, then enable push from the installed app. |
| Firefox | Windows, macOS, Linux | Site works in a tab; install / push is limited compared with Chromium. Prefer Chrome or Edge if you need closed-window alerts. |
Limits
- Not a SIM trunk. Pocket reachability depends on OS battery rules. The Android app + Unrestricted battery is the strongest path; Chrome PWA is weaker when the phone is deeply idle.
- Ring window ~3 minutes. If nobody answers, the caller sees no-answer and you may get a missed-call alert afterward.
- Push is per device. Enabling alerts on a laptop does not cover your phone. Each phone/browser needs its own Enable.
- Live tab vs closed app. An open logged-in session can ring immediately. A force-stopped browser/app often cannot until you open it again.
- Battery savers kill wake-ups. Android “Optimized / Restricted”, OEM sleeping apps, iOS Low Power Mode, and Focus/DND commonly delay or hide alerts.
- Busy line. If you are already in a call, new callers are told you are busy.
- Abuse controls. Very rapid call storms from one connection or IP are rate-limited so one person cannot push-bomb a name card.
- Messages vs calls. Inbox messages can require approved contacts if you turn that on. Voice/video/live chat follow your Calls / Live chat toggles on My Status.
- Network required. No cellular fallback number. Both sides need internet; some networks block WebRTC (try another Wi‑Fi or mobile data).
- Guest callers. Anyone with your link can try to call when calling is enabled — share the link only as widely as you want to be reachable.
Quick checklist
- My Status → Browser calling (and Live chat if you want it) enabled → Save.
- Notifications → Messages / Calls toggles on → Save.
- This device → Enable push alerts → status confirms this device.
- Prefer the Android app on phones; otherwise Chrome PWA + Unrestricted battery.
- Send test push while locking the phone to verify wake.
